I was talking to a friend the other day, and I was panicking over being left on read from a gallerist I really admire. They know who I am but I really wanted a conversation, maybe about some representation. When I told him what I should do he told me ‘nothing’… I couldn’t comprehend it, I mean this is a gallery I’m sure everyone would want to be a part of, how could I just do… ‘nothing’. He put it best when he said
Friend: “the gallery knows who you are, what are you gonna talk about when you speak”
Me: …
Friend: “Exactly, wait till you’re about to do your show or something of importance, take it in steps, it’s sick you shot your shot, but not every shot has to be the killshot”
It’s true, even if your hunting, should you miss, sometimes hitting a limb can be just as effective and just like that, I relearned patience.
Moral of the story: Take a chance, but go in with little expectation and more of a plan. You only get one chance to make a first impression, better make it count!
